From a 15 Pyle Subwoofer to a PLCM10 Backup Camera: An Installer's 8-Step Checklist

I've handled parts ordering and installation for an auto-electronics shop in Phoenix since 2018, and I keep a private file of my own screw-ups. It isn't for show—it's survival. At last count, I've personally made and documented fourteen significant mistakes, totaling roughly $4,600 in wasted budget when you count reorders and rework. Maybe $5,100 if you include shop time. I'd have to check the spreadsheet.

That file turned into the checklist below. If you order, install, or resell car audio, backup cameras, and vehicle electronics, this list is for you. Use it when a customer asks you to quote a 15 Pyle subwoofer, when you're speccing a Pyle PLCM10 license plate mount rear view camera, or when you're about to tell someone that any speaker wire will do. I've made every mistake on this list so you don't have to.

1. Test the Electrical System Before You Install Anything

People think a code reader is for diagnosing a failure. Actually, the more valuable time to use one is before you start an installation. You want to know the battery's state of charge, what the alternator is producing at idle, and whether the vehicle has stored codes that could become an argument later.

In September 2022, I installed an amplifier and a subwoofer in a sedan that started fine every morning. Two days later, the customer called: dead battery. My first instinct was to blame the amp's draw. I put a code reader on the car and watched the live data—the alternator was putting out 13.2 volts. It sounded okay until I checked the vehicle's spec: it needed 13.8 volts or higher to charge properly. A ten-minute pre-install scan would have caught it, and we ate the alternator replacement.

Some code reader models log data and export it as an HTML report you can open in any browser. That's saved me more than once when a customer swore a warning light wasn't there before we touched the car.

2. Pick the Enclosure First, Then the 15" Pyle Subwoofer

People think a bigger subwoofer means louder, deeper bass. In reality, the enclosure and the available space in the vehicle come first. You can put a fantastic 15-inch sub in a box that's too small and it will sound worse than a mediocre 12-inch sub in a properly sized enclosure.

Last spring, a customer asked for "a 15 Pyle subwoofer"—no box, no amp plan, no vehicle measurements. I sold him a Pyle 15 without asking about the enclosure he already had. On install day, we found out his box had 5.5 inches of mounting depth. The sub I picked needed about 6.75 inches. What I do now: measure the space, get the enclosure's dimensions, then verify the sub's mounting depth, cutout diameter, and recommended airspace. 3. Match Impedance and RMS Before You Connect Anything

If you're selling or installing an amp and subwoofer together, check both ratings before powering anything up. Is the sub single or dual voice coil? What impedance can the amplifier handle? What's the RMS power in both directions?

I once wired a dual voice coil sub in parallel and connected it to an amp that wasn't rated for that low of an impedance. The amp ran hot, dropped into protect mode, and smelled like a bad decision. I told the customer the sub was defective, replaced it, and found out the replacement did the same thing. The sub wasn't the problem. I was.

Use a digital multimeter to verify the final impedance before you connect the amp. Trust RMS numbers, not "peak power" marketing numbers.

4. Size the Speaker Cable by Distance and Load

When customers ask about the best speaker cable for car audio, they usually want a brand name. The more useful answer is to use the right gauge for the distance and power, and to use actual copper if you can. I like 16 AWG for short runs up to about 12 feet at moderate power. For longer runs or higher power, step up to 14 AWG. Serious power into a sub in the back of an SUV can justify 12 AWG.

I used to buy CCA (copper-clad aluminum) because it was cheaper, until a Pyle marine audio job in 2023 gave me a new respect for corrosion. In a boat or RV, tinned OFC (oxygen-free copper) is worth the extra cost. What counted as best practice a few years ago has changed, especially for vehicles that sit outside year-round.

5. Treat the Backup Camera Like a System, Not a Single Part

The Pyle PLCM10 license plate mount rear view camera looks straightforward: it mounts over the plate and sends video back to a display. But the install problems I've run into aren't with the camera itself. They're with everything around it.

Last year I ordered a batch of plate cameras for a fleet of work vans. I assumed the reverse light wire was the same color on every van. 6. Bench-Test the Whole System Before You Reassemble Anything

Here's where my overconfidence always shows up. I knew I should test the amp, sub, camera, and head unit together before putting the interior back together, but one Friday in March 2024, I thought, "what are the odds? It's basically the same setup I did last week."

The odds caught up with me. We installed a complete audio and camera package, buttoned up the interior, and handed over the keys. The camera image was upside down, the amp was in protect mode because of a bad RCA, and the sub was out of phase. Every one of those issues was fixable—if we wanted to pull the panels again. That's exactly what happened.

Now the bench test is non-negotiable. Check power, ground, remote, signal, and speaker polarity. Thirty minutes on the bench beats three hours in the vehicle.

7. Put the Small Stuff on a Detailing Tool Cart

This may be the least glamorous step in the checklist, but it saves real money. I keep a detailing tool cart next to the install bay for the small stuff: license plate camera screws, wire connectors, zip ties, and the torx bits that only show up once a month.

There was a Friday when I put a set of plate camera mounting screws in my shirt pocket and then cleaned the shop. I found them—actually, no. I didn't find them. That's the point. We had to order a replacement kit and delay the customer's install for one dumb reason: no cart, no labeled bin, no process.

For small replacement parts, I've mailed them in a plain envelope. According to USPS (usps.com), First-Class Mail letters were $0.73 per ounce as of January 2025, though postal rates usually adjust in January and July, so check the current price.

8. Don't Write a Product Claim You Can't Back Up

Since a lot of us sell this gear to shops and retail customers, the last step is about listings. If you advertise a camera as "waterproof" but the video connector isn't, you'll own that return. If you promise a subwoofer "fits all vehicles," you're inviting someone to buy a 15-inch Pyle subwoofer for a compact car with no enclosure space.

FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov) require that claims be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence. If you're using endorsements, the relationship has to be clear, too. I check our listings against those guidelines now, because one misleading line can cost more than any restocking fee.

The Checklist Is Only as Good as the Habit

The fundamentals haven't changed: measure, verify, test, and don't assume. But the industry has evolved. What was best practice in 2020 doesn't cover today's charging systems, wiring materials, or how far backup cameras have come. The checklist still works—use it, read the spec sheets, and don't be me.
